LEADERSHIP TEAM

Derek Jensen, President & Girl's Program Director

As the Owner and Director of Girl's Programs for Division1 VBC, Derek operates on the belief that training at an Elite level doesn't mean you need to sacrifice care for the individual athlete. Communication and working to build the complete athlete are always his first priorities.

Ben Jacobson, Marketing Manager & Assistant Director

  • Playing Experience: Played for Glenbard West High School, team captain for senior year. 3 years of club volleyball at Sports Performance , and 1 year with Division1 VBC.
  • Coaching Experience: I have coached 9 teams across 6 years with Division1 VBC, ranging everywhere from Girls 13's to Boys 17's. Prior to joining the staff at D1 I assisted the boys and girls volleyball programs at Glenbard West, offering additional training and head coaching at the freshman level.
  • Coaching Philosophy: I began coaching volleyball as a way to stay in touch with a sport I no longer had the time or means to play actively, and just as soon as I started I knew that I was hooked. Having the opportunity to give back to a community that meant so much to me while growing up is very special to me, and I count myself fortunate to be able to work in a role that is so fulfilling. As a coach, I make it my goal each season to not only improve the team's level of play, but to develop positive training habits that translate to their lives off the court.
  • Fun Facts: I studied Music at Valparaiso University, and before coming on full-time with D1 I worked as a composer-arranger for various institutions in the Great Lakes area.

  • Coaching Philosophy: I coach to bring out the best in each of my athletes whether that's on or off the court. I believe in teaching transferable skills that can benefit an athlete well beyond my time with him/her. I live for the "lightbulb" moment, when an athlete finally understands or performs a skill that has taken them however long to get. Volleyball has given me and shown me so much already and I want to give that back to the kids every way I can. My coaching style is to better not only your child's skills but to develop their IQ to process more than the basics. Ive learned and seen how crucial it can be during big matches for a player to have the ability to break down whats going on and do the best thing to make themselves and their team succeed.
  • Fun Facts: Originally born in Oak Park, I moved and grew up in Downers Grove. I've performed in 3 musicals while in high school along with being in select vocal groups throughout my high school career. • Coaching Philosophy: I got into coaching years ago because I loved the sport but wasn't good enough to play at the college level. I met a very great coach in Gordon Mayforth when he was at SPVB and was fortunate to learn from him and follow him to Loyola and help start that program. Now having coached over 20 years it's amazing how much volleyball has given me. I'd like to think I am the type of coach most guys would like to play for and try and create a competitive environment in the gym.

I also coach for Northwestern University Women's team.
  • Coaching Philosophy: For me coaching goes beyond the skills of the game. I learned a lot about the in and outs of life through playing sports and I hope to do the same with the players on my team. If my players walk away at the end of the season better people than when they came in then I know I had success. As a coach I preach to my players two things: 1) Do your job.I feel that if everyone takes care of what is expected of them then they can come closer as a group. 2) Do things the right way. Bad habits can form quickly but if we are able to do things the right way more often then we can have more success.

  • Coaching Philosophy: I started coaching because I sat back one day and realized that some of the most influential people in my life were my former coaches. In addition to them helping me develop my skills and knowledge of the game, they helped me to become who I am today. Sounds cliché, but their guidance, advice and belief in me helped me in ways that I never understood when I was their athlete. And, I hope that I can provide that same support for the players throughout the gym.

  • Coaching Philosophy: I coach volleyball because the sport has given me so much throughout my life and I want to be able to give back. I enjoy the process of bringing a group of individuals together to accomplish a single goal as one team. I like to think that I am a positive coach and that I give good feedback to players in practice and gameplay that can help bring their game to the next level.

  • Coaching Experience: 16 Elite Green D1 Southside boys, 16 Regional Green Boys, 14 Elite White Girls. I have been coaching at D1 for 3 years
  • Coaching Philosophy: The reason I coach Volleyball is I want these kids to have a chance to understand where 100% focus and hard work can get them. This for me doesn't just apply to volleyball but also into everyday life. If I can show them the understanding of this not only will they be good volleyball players, but also good students and workers. My philosophy is focusing on the players and showing them that the foundation of sustained success is a mentality of continuous improvement which will lead to growth and learning. Everyone in the gym is a key contributor and have to get everyone to help each other succeed. As long as we have the right priorities and direct positivity in both ways where we can support each other constructively and positively then we will see bondage and the will to learn/ get better for the players.
  • Fun Facts: I work as a freelance artist and currently live in Burbank, IL.

  • Coaching Philosophy: I coach because I love volleyball and I miss playing! Coaching allows me to get back in the gym and work with other coaches and players who love the game. I am not the kind of coach who puts all the focus on winning, I am proud of the team who leaves it all on the floor win or lose.

  • Coaching Experience: Division 1 VBC 2016-present, Guys 14's Middle School, 15 Regional Green, 18 Elite Grey and Girls 14 Regional White
  • Coaching Philosophy: I began coaching volleyball because I wanted to pass on the love and passion of the sport to youth just as my coaches had done so to me. The sport is truly a team sport and there cannot be a weak link on the court or else the entire group fails. That being said, I try to over inform each player with their responsibilities and their teammates so that everyone can work as a coherent unit on the court. One of my favorite coaching mottos is: If you think practice is boring... compare it to sitting on the bench!
  • Fun Facts: Graduate Student at DePaul, anticipated graduation in 2020. I'm from Park Ridge, IL.

(ok they are awful) and I could hit extremely well, she switched me to an OH.
  • Coaching Experience: I have coached for 3 different clubs - all ages from 12-18. This will be my second year with D1.
  • Coaching Philosophy: I have always and will always love this sport - the game, the excitement, the skill it takes. Being good at something is always fun, but being able to help someone get better at something you LOVE is even better. It is beyond rewarding to see the "click" when a player makes a correction and has success from something you have helped with. I am so glad to be a part of such a great organization and wonderful group of people in my favorite community - the volleyball world!

I want to share the passion and knowledge for the game to the younger generations. The coaches that I have looked up to has gotten me where I am as well as made me who I am today. I coach to give back and hope to impact the athletes as much as my coaches have on me. I would consider myself as a pretty laid back coach. As long as the athletes are staying focused and working hard, the results will come.

I believe volleyball is and always should be a positive experience for everyone involved- players, parents, and coaches. It teaches so many lessons: getting along with others, staying positive, brushing things off, persevering, working smarter & together not necessarily harder, the importance of clear communication, exhibiting respect, being kind, and so much more! I expect a lot from my players and hold them to a high standard while helping them learn from those lessons and become better people in the process. I continue to coach at D1 because the community is incredibly positive and supportive- I hope that shines through in every aspect and interaction you have with us!

My passion for teaching and watching others learn, grows more and more when I see athletes fall in love with this game right before my eyes. As much as I strive for team success on the court, developing the person who comes off the court is the bigger responsibility. GO D1!

I had a lot of great mentors in and out of the athletic world growing up and know how important those relationships can be to someone trying to figure out their place in the world. I try to be the coach that instills the attitude that there is fun to be had, but first work must be done. If everyone stays focused and disciplined on the task at hand the fun will come naturally.
