As the Owner and Director of Girl's Programs for Division1 VBC, Derek operates on the belief that training at an Elite level doesn't mean you need to sacrifice care for the individual athlete. Communication and working to build the complete athlete are always his first priorities.
Before coming on full time with D1, Derek spent his career working in the Sports Operations and Marketing field for the Chicago Sport and Social Club and the Chicago Bears.
Growing up in the West Suburbs of Chicago, Derek played club for SPVB from age 11-18. His team was consistently ranked top 5 in the country his 15-18U years, taking 2nd at the 2003 USAV Nationals and 5th in 2004 and 2005.
After 8 years as both an assistant and associate head coach at Loyola University Chicago Men’s Volleyball that included 3 NCAA Final Four Appearances and 2 National Championships, Kris joined D1 as the Director of Boys Volleyball and Vice President in June 2018. Inspired by creating opportunities for young men through the sport of volleyball, Kris’ experience with the U19 & U17 national teams ignited his passion to grow the game at the youth level.
Son of 1984 USA Gold Medalist Aldis Berzins, Kris has grown up around the sport of volleyball all of his life. Walking on to the men’s volleyball team at Loyola as a Libero in his freshman year through an open tryout, he quickly carved out a starting role at outside hitter. After a year and a half years playing professionally overseas, he began his coaching a career joining the staff at Loyola Men’s Volleyball in 2011.
